International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of Saint Jerome, the patron saint of translators.
Appointed by the pope, Saint Jerome was the official translator of the Bible into Latin in the 3rd century B.C. He surrounded himself with ladies of the night for whom translation was a means of getting back onto the path of virtue…
This version of the bible is now referred to as the Vulgate.
Since 1953, the International Translators Federation (ITF) and, in France, the SFT (Société Française des Traducteurs) celebrate this day.
In 1991, the Federation floated the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day, in solidarity with all of the communities of translators worldwide, to publicise and promote the translation professions at international level.
Every year, the ITF puts forward a theme and asks all of the member national associations to join in and celebrate this day.
This year, numerous cities across the world will play host to an event focusing on: “Translation and Interpreting: Connecting Worlds”.
In Paris, the Passages Couverts shopping arcade in the 2nd arrondissement will play host to a discovery trail involving translators and interpreters keen to talk about their incredible profession which is often little known by the general public.
