Definitions

• Word count increase: coefficient for multiplying the number of words in the foreign language, giving the number of French words in the target text.
• Target language: the language into which we translate the original text.
• Source language: the language in which the original text is written.
• Mother tongue: the first language learnt, the culture in which the translator was brought up and into which they translate.
• Translation memory: a translation memory is a database which contains source text segments and the corresponding target text segments. Translation memories are used to store translated segments, so that they can be reused at a later date.
• Target words: target language words.
• Proofreading: comparative revision of the target and sources texts by a translator of a similar or higher level than the initial translator.
• Target text: text written in the target language.
• Source text: text written in the source language.
